Prince Karl Egon IV gave the Donaueschingen Palace its present form through a comprehensive renovation. The transformation not only broke up the plain, elongated façade with a prominent central projection and a grand dome but also completely redesigned the interior. Since then, the Donaueschingen residence has combined the representative grandeur and spaciousness of a palace with the comfort of a villa, all executed in a style heavily influenced by French aesthetics.
In Germany’s predominantly Baroque palace landscape, Donaueschingen Palace stands out as unique. This was largely due to Princess Dorothea, the wife of Karl Egon IV, who hailed from one of France’s great families, the House of Talleyrand-Périgord.
